Interactive Audio on the Web

Yes, I have been able to post audio snippets online with Camtasia, but what about student responses? What about client feedback? How can I hear what they have to say?

Well, the solution is now here at Odeo. First of all this is a FREE account. Secondly, students and clients do not have to sign up to send you a response. All they need is a microphone, built in or external. Odeo provides little badges, so they can just click and talk. Responses are emailed to you.

I'm using Odeo to hear my granddaughter in Australia!

Video Blogs

Now videos can be added to your blogs.

Since I have just been grading final video projects from Education majors, I am very anxious to see how this works. Because next year, instead of students snailmailing me videos in a buzzillion different kinds of formats, I can have them post these to a class blog!

Thwarted Innovation
New Distance Learning Report from the Univ of Penn.

A major new study from the University of Penn.

* If we build it they will come - not so.
* The kids will take to e-learning like ducks to water - not quite.
* E-learning will force an change in the way we teach - not by a long shot.

"The hard fact is that e-learning took off before people really knew how to use it."

Check out this 76 page easy to read report and how they collected the data at their "weather stations."

Voice over IP

Now that the computers are set up wirelessly, I wanted to move to the next step with the telephone. With VONAGE, I can have unlimited long distance calls in the US and Canada and calls to my daughter in Australia are only 4 cents a minute. Now if she also signed up for Vonage in Australia, we could have the same area code and have FREE CALLS.

Only hitch is you need Broadband and she has just moved to a new house ...

Still it works great. Sends me email when I have a voice mail message saved, has caller id and much more that I haven't even explored yet. All this and wireless too.

Exploring Wireless

I just set up a little wireless network in our temporary home - 28 foot Class C motor home. While in this RV park we are connected to high speed internet with two laptops, previously strung with ethernet cable across the cab! Now with the wireless, we can be inside or outside and both online as the same time.

Set up using Airport, which comes with an extra port for a printer, was easy and seamless for both the PC and the Mac.

As we travel cross country, I will be blogging the wireless adventure. In intial investigation, the easiest access points will be truck stops. Now here's a brand new audience for online education - What about time management for truckers? Or memory improvement for truckers? or maybe even Trucking Math!

Computing: smaller and cheaper

Now here's something to think about:

The cost of the Zire by Palm is the same as a cost of a pair of sneakers!

2004 and counting ...

Welcome back to cyberspace and 2004 serendipities.

The best techno presents were the ski cap with built in headphones. At the $7 at Wallmart, this was the rage for the college students, who said that they were listening to their lectures on the slopes!!

The second prize went to an activity called Geocaching, where 6 family members found "Ernie's Treasure" at Long Island Sound using the GPS. This spawned buying more GPS and wondering what the geology teacher could do for acitvities and whether the health teacher could assign walking tours with geocaching. Want to know what geocaching is ? Check out
