lucyonline was birthed out of need in 1997. Lucy was geographically bound in Salem, Oregon, but faculty and staff internationally needed training and the company's expertise. Despite years of juggling workshops and trainings between a full academic schedule, there was still time, but not availability. Futhermore the cost of bringing trainers to campus was increasing and expenses often cost more than the actual training and direct services to clients.

Solution? Walk the Talk and provide online training. So when Curtis Miles called from Piedmont Technical College in Parkland, South Carolina, lucyonline was born. lucyonline provided a graduate level class, Integrating the Internet into the Curriculum for 40% of the faculty.

Although the topic may now seem mundane, the results of this project were astronomical:

Faculty soon discovered that they didn't really have computers on their desks. What they had was dumb terminals hung off a mainframe. For those of you who don't remember these days, dumb terminals do not connect to the Net!

One teacher was teaching about the Net, but did not have the students accessing the net. When she discovered that students could have email addresses free through the college, she immediately enrolled her whole class.

One of the teachers was from Ghana and discovered a listserv of fellow countrymen.

Science teachers printed off Nasa images in color and posted them for students who did not have Net access.

Faculty learned by doing in the context of their discipline. They were learning about the Net by being on it and experiencing it. This was like learning how to swim, by being in the swimming pool, not on the deck looking at the water.
